What Is Plant and Machinery Insurance?
Plant and Machinery Insurance may cover accidental loss of or damage to insured equipment, including excavators, loaders, cranes, forklifts and other commercial machinery. It can help with eligible repair or replacement costs following insured events.
Cover may include:
- Accidental damage, collision and rollover.
- Fire, theft, storm and malicious damage.
- Owned and hired-in machinery, where included.
- Declared attachments and accessories.
- Transit, loading and unloading, where covered.
- Machinery breakdown, recovery costs and loss of hire, where specifically insured.
Plant and Machinery Insurance is commonly used by earthmoving, construction, mining and plant hire businesses. Cover can be arranged for individual machines or fleets, with specific arrangements for wet hire and dry hire.
Unlike Public Liability Insurance, it primarily covers the machinery itself rather than third-party injury or property damage claims.
Cover is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits, exclusions and insurer acceptance. This information is general only and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs.
What Does Plant and Machinery Insurance Cover?
Plant and Machinery Insurance, also known as Plant and Equipment Insurance or Contractor Plant and Machinery Insurance, may cover accidental physical loss or damage to insured machinery used for business purposes. Depending on the policy, this can include damage caused by collision, rollover, fire, theft, storm and other insured events.
Businesses may also be able to arrange extensions for hired-in plant, machinery hired out to customers, transit, mechanical breakdown and loss of hire income. The available cover depends on the equipment, its insured value, ownership, operating activities, work locations and insurer acceptance.
This page focuses on insurance for the machinery itself. Insurance for the business operating the machinery, including Public Liability Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance, is a separate consideration.
This information is general only and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Cover is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits, exclusions and insurer acceptance.

What Doesn’t Plant and Machinery Insurance Cover?
Plant and Machinery Insurance does not automatically cover every type of equipment damage, breakdown or financial loss. Common exclusions and limitations may include:
- Wear and tear: Gradual deterioration, corrosion, ageing and damage arising from normal use.
- Mechanical or electrical breakdown: Internal component failures may be excluded unless Machinery Breakdown Insurance is specifically included.
- Poor maintenance or existing defects: Damage resulting from inadequate servicing, known defects or pre-existing conditions may be excluded.
- Undeclared machinery or attachments: Equipment not included under the policy’s insured property description, machinery schedule or agreed declaration arrangements.
- Unauthorised use: Damage involving unapproved operators, excluded activities or machinery used outside the insurer’s accepted operating conditions.
- Undeclared hire arrangements: Hired-in equipment, wet hire or dry hire activities that have not been included and accepted by the insurer.
- Non-return of hired equipment: Machinery that a customer fails to return, fraudulent conversion or voluntary parting with equipment may be excluded unless specific cover applies.
- Transit and loading damage: Damage during transport, loading or unloading may require specific policy extensions.
- Loss of income and project delays: Lost hire income, business interruption, equipment downtime and consequential financial losses may be excluded unless relevant extensions are arranged.
- Third-party injury or property damage: Claims involving injury to others or damage to their property generally require separate liability insurance or an applicable liability extension.
- Excluded weather events and theft circumstances: Flood, theft without required security measures and certain other events may be restricted or excluded depending on the policy.
Exclusions vary between insurers and policies. Some risks may be insurable through optional extensions or separate policies, subject to insurer acceptance. The applicable excesses, operating conditions, insured equipment and policy limits should also be reviewed.
Cover is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits, exclusions and insurer acceptance. All Trades Cover can help you review available cover options and understand the limitations that may apply to your machinery.

Why You Might Need Plant and Machinery Insurance

- Meeting specified machinery insurance requirements in equipment hire agreements
- Covering hired-in machinery, where arranged

Insurance does not replace machinery maintenance, plant registration, operator competency, workplace safety procedures, inspections, road registration or contractual risk management.
The policy’s insured machinery, accepted activities, limits and exclusions should be checked against how the equipment is used.
State-by-State Plant and Machinery Insurance Requirements
Plant and Machinery Insurance is not subject to one universal compulsory material damage insurance requirement across Australia.
However, finance agreements, lease documents, hire contracts and project insurance schedules may require particular machinery insurance arrangements.
Separate legal obligations may apply to plant registration, design registration, high-risk work licensing, workplace safety and machinery operated on public roads.
Requirements can differ depending on the state or territory, machinery type, business activity and whether equipment is used on residential, commercial, civil, industrial or mining sites.
This information is general only and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Requirements were reviewed in October 2026 and may change. Machinery owners and businesses should confirm current obligations with the relevant regulator, financier, contract principal and insurer.

When Plant and Machinery Insurance May Help
Scenario: Your business is acquiring a new excavator through equipment finance. The finance agreement requires the machine to be insured for specified risks, with the financier noted on the policy documentation.
You already have insurance for other machinery, but the new excavator has not been added to your current schedule.
Before the machine is delivered, you want to establish whether the existing insurer can accept the equipment and provide the documentation requested by the finance company.
How we may be able to help
- Review the machinery details and insurance requirements in the finance agreement
- Check the current machinery schedule and insured values
- Approach insurers about adding the equipment or available alternative arrangements
- Review interested-party or financier noting requirements
- Assist with arranging Certificates of Currency or other documents where available
What this can help you manage
- Identifying equipment insurance requirements before delivery
- Understanding the proposed insured value and settlement basis
- Checking whether the machinery has been accepted by the insurer
- Addressing financier documentation requests
- Reviewing policy limits, excesses and exclusions
This example is general only and does not mean every finance requirement will be met or that a claim will be covered. Cover is subject to the relevant policy terms, conditions, limits, exclusions and insurer acceptance.
